I'll be doing some retrospective blogs soon about some cool stuff that happened over the past few months, but for the time being, just wanted to post this vid clip that was taken of a booth performance I did at the NAMM show (Gruv Gear booth) a few weeks ago. The bass clarinetist is Keith Felch and the percussionist is David Owens. Both players are hugely talented and great friends of mine, and they each performed on various tracks from both my "Pondering the Sushi" and "Tea in the Typhoon" projects.

It's a bit rough...but live as can be...absolutely no fixes!

Hope you enjoy it! Nothing crazy, just taking along some "Perfect Push-ups" and a resistance band with me when I go on the road...trying to be consistent and hitting it every other day.

The odd thing is that I started checking my body weight every few weeks beginning around May, thinking that it would provide some motivation when I started seeing some weight gain. Want to know what's happened to my weight since May? I lost 9 pounds. Yep...I apparently was well on my way to becoming a "fat skinny man". Go figure.

Anyway, that's not the point of this rather vulnerable glimpse into my world.

It's rather that 3 weeks ago, I was feeling especially gung-ho and decided to hit the hotel weight room before heading for the airport to catch my flight home (the morning after we played at the LifeLight Festival in Sioux Falls, SD, for those of you keeping track). I proceeded to gank (yes, it's a verb) my shoulder and had to completely stop exercising for the past 3 weeks. Every time I even entertained the thought of working out, a sharp pain in my right shoulder would remind me to not be an idiot.

SO....this morning was the first time I've exercised since September 5. 'Course, not sure if it really qualifies as a "work out", as it consisted of 15 push-ups and 10 curls...but I decided that I'm too old to be injuring myself in the name of health. Seems to make much more sense to ease back into things gradually.

Not that any of the aforementioned is of consequence to you, but it reminded me that sometimes (oftentimes?) it's the small stuff. Extremely stoked that my shoulder seems to be almost back to normal, and that I can resume my feeble efforts to invest in my physical health. Reminded me to be grateful for all the things that I usually take for granted.

Have a good week! :^)Normhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-29662381296770793902010-07-01T13:52:00.000-07:002010-07-01T14:02:59.819-07:00GK Factory Tour (Part 4 of 4)!As promised, here is the 4th and final installment of a full factory tour at Gallien-Krueger. We hit it off right away, as she was from Hawaii (I spent 5 years of my childhood there) and we spent much time just talking about our favorite Island "grinds" (food) that we both missed now that we lived on the mainland.

Kelly and Kaulana ended up spending a day with me and my family when they came out to Southern California the following year, and it was like spending time with friends we'd known all our lives. My family & I still have fond memories of that day.

The last time I saw her was when she brought a bunch of teens from her church's youth group to Miami when I was playing there with Linc last year. She had such a passion for investing in and encouraging those kids. And she brought me a ziplock bag full of mochi crunch (a popular snack in Hawaii) that she had made...always thinking of others.

She lived her faith. She was absolutely sold out for God. She was crazy in love with Kelly. Together they'd invested their all in the youth at the church, and countless kids were impacted in life-changing ways through their ministry. She was the real deal. And also just an extremely cool, funny and genuinely caring person.

Kaulana, you finished well, my seestah. Thank you for being a light.

Please pray for Kelly, their extended family and friends...Normhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-14400686390442355052010-01-10T00:05:00.000-08:002010-01-10T00:15:35.247-08:00GK Factory Tour! I've had a number of close musician friends in town for years and it's always great to hook back up with them on their home turf...and there's also the BBQ. :^)

I've been a fan of Gates BBQ for years, and never miss an opportunity to go grab a "beef on bun with bread, lean as" (translation: BBQ beef brisket on two slices of white bread - the way it's supposed to be, btw! - and as lean as possible). There are certainly a number of AMAZING barbeque places in KC, and I've eaten at a bunch...but there's just something special about Gates. The sauce is GREAT, too...got a little kick, but not too much...very tasty.

Grabbed a quick lunch at Gates yesterday with my good friends Rod Lincoln (drummer) and Kevin Rogers (guitarist). You've probably heard them if you're familiar with my music...they both played on my Pondering the Sushi project. Stellar musicians and good guys. Even cooler is that many of these people have also become friends.

To date on the Tea in the Typhoon project, I've been so honored to have John & Sachi Patitucci, Gregg Bissonette and Rob Mullins contribute their artistry. And as of Monday afternoon, added to that list was none other than musical giant (and Grammy-nominee) Michael Manring. One of the most technically innovative, unique and brilliant bassists ever, Michael's also hugely expressive and emotive. I've loved his music since first hearing his Drastic Measures project back in the 90's. On top of all of that, he's also about the most genuinely cool person you're likely to meet. AWESOME guy.

I'll try to get a video blog posted soon, but suffice it to say that Michael tracked fretless bass (with liberal use of his amazing EBow) on a tune on the upcoming Typhoon project called "Rockefeller Forest" (also featuring Gregg Bissonette on drums). It's a vibey and emotive tune that has West African leanings rhythmically. I'm confident you're going to dig his stuff!!

Thanks for your interest & more updates soon!Normhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-27550795338974700412009-07-06T11:03:00.000-07:002009-07-09T22:38:26.062-07:00Typhoon Session: John & Sachi Patitucci!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 174px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpEAhzLYTuntS8algEHMuhT427Bn_0KuTZq1liNx33ZGcAfJgD3pw3qZWGB3N6PvzRpvVW4IArBYf5UGvqeI8PYoL4eww3tycL_Z4Ju3EDlLo5Iv3oqNIr9OPUoFdhzLzdERYro_hYJeMk/s200/Picture+6.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356523195668545282" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 158px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWsH7_Vfk2Q-j4IN6u_fUKtt8ECcNT7Ab2VfdoMEjKcJAEIXZfavr5R8R6iO__0TC3xT87N2Cf_ofmBlKwEewMIACUdoK7n2UaMim7wbYm6w0maQbkoPR0yZ7i6oiMyI8B2e84O74ote0Z/s200/Picture+4.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356523208445615218" />

Upon returning from the NY session back in May, I was slammed between a road trip with Lincoln and trying to recuperate from the nasty cold I caught. It just occurred to me that I consequently spaced out on blogging about the Patitucci session! :^)

So let me retroactively express what a cool experience that was. I've been a fan of John's since first hearing him with Chick Corea's Elektric Band back in the early 90's, and was honored to meet the Grammy-winner in conjunction with an interview I did with him for Christian Musician magazine back in 2002 (click <a href="http://www.normstockton.com/communication"target="_blank">here to check it out, by the way - he shared some great stuff).

I called him back in February and he enthusiastically agreed to contribute to the Typhoon project, and even threw his wife (Sachi, a world-class cellist) into the mix! I initially planned to just send WAV files to New York and have them send me their tracks, but after thinking further, it made much more sense for me to be at the session to provide immediate feedback...plus I decided that I would be kicking myself for years to come if I missed the opportunity to work with the Patitucci's first hand. :^)

So I flew to New York and the session was held at Doug Epstein's home studio on May 6. John played upright on several tunes and contributed a trademark 6-string solo on another. Sachi tracked cello on several tunes as well. One tune in particular (the title track from Tea in the Typhoon) features a breakdown section where John's bowed upright and Sachi's cello are playing interweaving lines off of each other...I think you're going to like it. :^)

John's just as cool, humble and musically monstrous as I remembered (Sachi, as well!). Definitely a class act.

After the session, we walked down the block and picked up some great Italian food that we ate back at Doug's place while having a very cool chat (topics ranging from music education to ministry to our kids to John's days back in California to working with Wayne Shorter...and probably a few more that I'm not remembering at the moment).

Thanks, John & Sachi, for generously sharing your musical gift and for your humility.Normhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-41508137500090991212009-06-16T10:10:00.000-07:002009-06-16T15:47:21.845-07:00Facebook, Twitter and Update On The Way!About a week ago, I got pulled (almost kicking and screaming) into Facebook and Twitter. I heard back from a couple more of my faves within the last week and am ELATED that everyone's still on board - it's just a matter of working out scheduling. Can't wait to share about them...but will hold off till after those sessions!

We'll be sending out a groove update (my e-newsletter) in about a week with some pics from the sessions and more fun stuff. More on that once we're done & the tracks are in the bag!

Also had a tracking session in Los Angeles with the incredible Rob Mullins (solo artist, Crusaders) on piano a few weeks ago...WOW. You're going to flip over his stuff. I'd forgotten what an amazing musician Rob is. You might recall his solos on Pondering ("I'll Return For You" and "A Tender NAMM Moment"). Even better this time, as all of the pianos on this project will be real (i.e., mic'd acoustic grand pianos)!

By the way, Rob gave me a copy of his latest cd, "Storyteller", and it is absolutely brilliant. I encourage you to drop by iTunes and check it out. I particularly dug the first 2 and last 2 tunes, but the whole thing is great.

Anyway, the only immediate bummer is that I started feeling a bit under the weather after landing at JFK yesterday afternoon. I'm laying low and hoping to not have a congested brain for the session tomorrow.

Thanks for your ongoing interest & I'll have details about tomorrow soon!

Blessings- NormNormhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-18479592367164474682009-04-23T12:20:00.000-07:002009-06-16T15:44:07.652-07:00New CD Project Update - Part 1<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 216px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQwOVZe3TFB9I0WT1xV5feYl2AminsEIRceHtxCUamQHdcxyz00kAjNNca7sY_PJLUuU7epBjlDps8PBZbDWnmYJQ1dAQ0R5gy_3kZfG2Qk8w6q3kfY2DYAo4k-mrgGMcqoGX5hyAm2qTM/s320/Gregg+Still+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5348059865402072898" />
Some exciting news about the new CD project, including the announcement of drum phenom and overall great guy Gregg Bissonette being featured on 4 tunes!

My profuse apologies for taking so long between new posts...as you can probably tell, my plate has been full between road work, the CD production, etc., etc...and also trying to be reasonably present with my family and church between all of that! :^)

I will definitely post more frequently once the project is off to replication! I'm elated to say that much progress has been made! More about that in a sec.

For the rest of what's been keeping me busy work-wise, please check out Norm's "haps" page. The '09 season of Lincoln Brewster dates (at least those that have been confirmed to date) will be getting added in the next week or so. Looking forward to seeing you at a concert later this year!

Let's see...anything else to bring up before I talk about the project? I caught a NASTY chest cold right after the recent NAMM show, and have been flat on my back trying to recuperate. The drag is that I'd been targeting that window of time to be making some concentrated progress on the CD production...but it's tough to track when tempos all feel either lethargic or frantic (depending upon where I was in the cough syrup cycle).

By the way, I'm a Mac fan...but have to say that contrary to what I'd been told by all of my Mac friends all those years they were trying to convert me from a PC-based life...Macs are most assuredly not immune to their own problems. My Mac Pro spent most of the fall and winter in the shop, and was the source of untold frustration until within the past 2 weeks (after lots of work, including new motherboard and optical drive), it finally appears to have been 99% dialed in. There's still a minor issue with one of the plug-ins, but I've come up with a workaround that allows me to function. SO...the GREAT news is that I've been actually tracking (instead of computer troubleshooting) over the past few weeks. I can't tell you how good that feels after all of the technology grief. Huge thanks to my friends Erik (in San Jose) and Mike (in San Diego) who've both been hugely helpful in getting me up and running (and occasionally talking me down from the ledge!). :^)

Eleven tunes have been written (with a couple more decent song fragments still waiting in the wings) and are mapped out in Pro Tools sessions. At present, 5 of them have solid guide tracks down (played on either my MTD 535 or 735). I'm hoping to get most of the rest down and the tunes charted in time for keyboard overdubs slated for a week from Thursday. My work is cut out for me. I'm flying up to Alberta, Canada this coming Thursday to teach and do some playing at the Break Forth Canada conference, and am hoping to spend my flights and any downtime charting like crazy.

I've secured cameo participation from several AMAZING artists (will share names with you once we actually track) and am giddy with excitement. I think you're going to like them, too.

Sorry if the above sounds a bit scrambled! Just trying to get you updated as much as possible and get working. My family and I have had an amazing time reconnecting over the past few months as I've largely been off the road. My wife and I celebrated our 17th anniversary yesterday by convalescing with the kids and watching movies (2 of the 4 of us are sick). We'll celebrate properly once everyone's well again. I definitely married up...I'm a blessed man.

Hope all of you are well and having a fantastic 2009. Thanks for your interest & support!

Blessings- NormNormhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-20962560840275699912008-10-15T22:12:00.001-07:002008-10-16T19:47:08.211-07:00Preproduction on "Pondering" Follow-Up!My profuse apologies for the delayed post...I've been absolutely swamped! I had intended to post occasionally from the recent tour in support of Lincoln Brewster's newly released "Today Is The Day" project, but by the time I was able to come up for air, it was over! :^) HUGE thanks to all of you who made it out to the concerts and clinics. It was exceedingly cool meeting so many of you during the tour.

It's currently about 1:30 a.m. & I'm in my hotel room in Indianapolis. I have an early call time in the lobby, so will try to keep this short!

I've received lots of emails over the years from folks who've wondered when my next solo project would be completed (my solo debut, "Pondering the Sushi", was released in 2001....yikes!). Here's a video blog that lets you in on the preproduction process over the past few months and gives you a behind the scenes look. I'll try to keep you updated as further progress is made (at this juncture, it appears that the first few months of 2009 is my window for completing it - my travel schedule looks like it will be lightening up just a bit).

Anyway, I hope you enjoy! Thanks again to all of you who've expressed ongoing interest in my music...your support is so appreciated!

Blessings- Norm

Normhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-68585512755504688262008-08-23T18:43:00.000-07:002008-08-25T23:25:53.646-07:00An Evening at Angel Stadium<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCsIHxGZLSLoCny_FSp6sdpm_NnZbmTrA7vPpG6l46xGcEhIlHUBq2UCCVX53_8URro7EsbpCNpSzmq4wZ96mAeYZD0HjbRNns9VbnnEN-gz8mX3SCg7zN1igpu9sdEjLmpllqX8R6GPl9/s320/HC081608.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238708496242812610" />
We were honored to play at the Southern California Harvest Crusade on August 16…what an incredible experience.

Aside from the exhilaration of leading over 45,000 people in worship…or sharing the stage with the multi-platinum band P.O.D. and our friends in Leeland...or catching a brief glimpse from the dugout of a packed-out pro baseball stadium and imagining for an instant how terrifying it would be to be next up to bat in a critical game with a gazillion people depending upon you…aside from all of that, the coolest thing was watching some 4,000 people respond to Pastor Greg Laurie’s invitation at the end of the evening. The entire outfield was packed with people. I’m sure there was much celebration in heaven that night.

This was the first event that Pastor Greg had done since the tragic loss of his eldest son, Christopher, in a car accident just over 3 weeks prior. The saving grace was that the gig that night wasn't going to involve any slapping.

The bummer was that another production retreat for the "Pondering" follow-up (dang...I definitely need to come up with a name for this project) started the day after, and it was going to involve a lot of slap work. I've been an enthusiastic Gallien-Krueger user for the past 4 years, and continue to LOVE it.

Look for a factory tour in an upcoming feature!

By the way, I'm humbled to be the Featured Artist at the Gallien-Krueger website this month. As some of you know, I spent five years of my childhood living in Hawaii Kai on southeastern Oahu...so it's always a particular treat for me to be able to make it back here.

Spent 4 days on Maui at our timeshare in Kaanapali (the pic is the view out our window), with long stretches of snorkeling interspersed with short breaks to eat amazing food. Local food in Hawaii is...well, for me, it's kinda my soul food. It's a sublime blend of Asian (mostly Japanese, Korean & Chinese), Hawaiian and little dashes of American & European influences. Also had a great visit with Gina's brother & family who live about 5 minutes up the road from where we stayed.

Yesterday, we flew back to Oahu and visited with my parents and my brother & family. Watched the July 4th fireworks over Magic Island right out the window of my folks' condo. Happy July 4th to all of you of the USA persuasion, by the way!

I did bring along my bass in case I feel inspired one of these evenings to do some more writing and/or shedding...but for right now, I'm just recharging the batteries. I'm heading into a pretty busy stretch of conferences and road dates upon returning to the mainland the middle of next week, so have been taking the opportunity during this trip to get some focused quality time with my wife and daughters. It's been awesome. God is good.

Hope each of you are enjoying the summer, and are finding some downtime as well.

Blessings- Norm

Normhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-53977948468775996582008-06-19T01:24:00.001-07:002008-06-19T01:51:19.469-07:00Tour of MTD Facility! As I mentioned in an earlier post, I visited with Michael Tobias a few months ago at his shop in Kingston, New York (yes, it's the same "Kingston" for which "Autumn in Kingston" on my Pondering the Sushi project was named). Michael was kind enough to give us a rare glimpse into the operation where he builds what I (and countless others) consider the finest basses in the world.

Enjoy! And definitely drop by www.mtdbass.com for more info...

Blessings- Norm

Normhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16743867465708538770noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142576736815521219.post-5965193826264911842008-06-16T11:21:00.000-07:002008-12-11T20:01:54.304-08:00Mixing underway for Lincoln Brewster project!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-CJuCidvSN22CdAX-o07PWc6SaH7Afvw_RyOx18Ip1Mi-vPQyueo94wYLkdVz38u6v83UDDmGwP3FPLhyphenhyphenKalZ9l1r2uP2J9svd2aLmJogfRoocag3lTa9_RmdF07SYsbiQjbaYu42R-GZ/s320/Picture+3.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213643652963076050" />
I've been receiving mp3's every day or two from Lincoln as he proceeds with mixing the new project, and have been sending my feedback & comments up his way.
